BESS support structures

BESS support structures are the steelwork that carries a battery energy storage system: container sub-frames and grillage that spread container point loads, plinth frames for inverters and transformers, access steelwork, and cable and acoustic screening supports. They are load-rated to the equipment supplier's datasheets, hot-dip galvanised for a 25-year-plus outdoor design life, and supplied as one package to site.

What they do

Battery storage sites concentrate very heavy, precisely located loads onto compact foundations. A 20ft or 40ft containerised battery unit transfers its entire mass through corner castings, so the steelwork beneath it has to spread those point loads onto the slab or piles, hold the container level within the supplier's tolerance, and survive twenty-five years outdoors with no maintenance access underneath.

That combination — point-load engineering, tight levelling tolerances and long-life corrosion protection — is why BESS steelwork is usually procured as a dedicated package rather than lumped into general site steel.

Container sub-frames and grillage

Sub-frames and grillage steelwork that carry containerised battery units, levelled and rated for container corner-casting point loads. Set out to the container supplier's datasheet dimensions and tolerances.

Equipment plinth frames

Plinth and skid frames for inverters, PCS units, transformers and switchgear — sized for equipment footprints, service clearances and lifting points.

Cable and containment supports

Multi-tier stands, trapeze supports and containment steelwork for DC and AC cable runs between containers, inverters and the point of connection.

Access platforms, walkways and stairs

Maintenance access steelwork around and between units — platforms, walkways, staircases, handrail and open mesh flooring. Compliant with BS 5395 where specified.

Acoustic screening frames

Support frames for acoustic barriers and screening around BESS compounds and inverter stations, supporting planning-condition compliance on noise.

Equipment shelters and enclosures

Weatherproof, ventilated steel enclosures for switchgear, monitoring and auxiliary equipment — secure and access-ready.

Drawings are welcome but not required to start. Whatever you have of the following is enough for a first quotation:

  • General arrangement or site layout showing unit positions
  • Container or equipment datasheets — footprint, mass and point-load positions
  • Foundation or slab details, and levelling tolerance required
  • Wind zone or site location, and any acoustic planning conditions
  • Coating specification, or we can propose hot-dip galvanising to EN ISO 1461
  • Required delivery window and site access constraints

Documentation

Certification & documentation

Production is through EN 1090-certified factories, with execution class and documentation scope confirmed per project against the relevant factory certificate. KLY coordinates certification through its factories and does not self-certify; certificates are available on request. The document pack is agreed at quotation and typically includes:

  • Declaration of Performance (DoP)
  • CE / UKCA marking documentation
  • Material test certificates (EN 10204 3.1)
  • Welding procedure and welder qualification records
  • Inspection and dimensional check reports
  • Galvanising or coating certificates
  • Packing lists and delivery documentation

Yes. Container sub-frames and grillage steelwork are a core part of the BESS package — levelled and rated for container point loads, set out from your drawings or the container supplier's datasheets.

Hot-dip galvanising to EN ISO 1461 is the usual specification for outdoor battery storage steelwork, giving a long maintenance-free design life. Duplex systems — galvanising plus paint — can be supplied where a specific colour or additional durability is required.

Design responsibility remains with your appointed engineer, or an appointed independent engineer, depending on the project agreement. Where required, KLY can arrange engineering support through qualified independent partners, including detailing where only concept or GA information exists.
